I was in the market for a heavy duty hutch with farm house touches.
When, I finally found one on Offer Up and guess what, my neighbor was selling it. SCORE!
I am a big fan of making over furniture so, I'm documenting my make over for everyone to see hoping to inspire more people to give their old furniture a new look.
This is it. The before.
Great farm house details, real heavy wood and perfectly made.
The top part just freely sat on top of the cabinet. So I had 2 separate pieces to makeover.
I started by removing all the hardware and kept all the pieces in cups because I planned on reusing the hardware after they got a makeover as well.
You can really see how dirty it was once I removed the hardware.
I cleaned the entire hutch with Goof Off, following the directions on the back of the bottle.
This is safe for wood.
My next step was sanding. This step is the most important part in my opinion.
The sander I use is really old and belonged to my dad.
If you don't own a sander and plan to re-do furniture, I suggest investing in a good one.
The top of the cabinet had really thick mold, which made this a chore.
This is about half way through my sanding process.
After each piece was sanded really well. I dusted each piece off with a cloth to prepare for prime.
I chose Kilz Original, following the direction on back of the can, to prime my pieces
After my pieces were primed and dry, it was time to PAINT!!
I am a big fan of Floetrol and almost always use it. It eliminates brush and roller marks.
This is my first time using Valspar Furniture Paint
I used a roller brush and regular brush to apply my paint.
I wanted to keep the original hardware but it was in desperate need of cleaning.
I used the following recipe to clean the hardware:
2 TABLESPOONS SALT'
2 TABLESPOONS VINEGAR
2 CUPS HOT WATER.
I let the hardware soak for a couple hours, rinsed and brushed with an old toothbrush.
I had to soak 2 times before I got them clean.
My next step was to paint them. I choose Rust-Oleum American Accents Ultra Cover 2x
After all the paint dried (1 day) I put a coat of Minway Polycrylic on the bottom part.
and there ya go!
I think it fits well with my farmhouse theme!
